So, you have your website blog ready to go. How do you choose blog topics to write about?

When choosing blog topics, it’s important to keep in mind that you don’t just want to drive traffic to your blog, you want to drive the right traffic.

You want readers who will keep coming back; readers with the potential to convert from browsers to buyers, prospects to paying customers.

Your blog is also an excellent way to share valuable information with your existing customers or clients. It helps keep them engaged in-between purchases or projects; keeping you front of mind.

Now, back to blog topic ideas.

If nothing else, your blog posts should be helpful or informative. Make it something worth reading! Each post should bring your reader one step closer to “add to cart”, “click to subscribe” or “enquire now”. But how do you decide what blog topics to write about? Keep reading and you’ll find out.

#1 “How to” Guides

“How to” guides are the perfect way to offer your expertise in the most practical way, for free.

Any time I try something new, I default to a quick Google search to find a “how to” blog to guide me through the process. I found this particularly useful when creating this website!

Where you can, write a “how to” post for your audience with a step-by-step guide to help them navigate a process related to your niche. And if you think it’s been done before, it probably has. That’s okay! We all have nuances in our individual processes and you never know how yours might benefit your audience and set you apart from your competitors.

This isn’t just for service-based businesses. If you’re a retail business, try writing a guide on how to use your products to help your customer yield optimal results. They’ll thank you for it!


#2 Case studies & stories

Everyone loves a good story! So why not incorporate stories in your blog?

Stories are an enjoyable read and relatable, the ultimate recipe for positive reader engagement. You can use stories to share customer or client experiences using your product or service. Depending on your preference, you can adopt an informal approach or write a more formal case study with the strategic intent of marketing your product.

As a guide, include the following key elements to effectively tell your customer success story:

  1. Challenge – what challenge did your client or customer face?
  2. Solution – how did your product/service solve their challenge?
  3. Results – what was the outcome (proof of the solution)?

#3 Updates & announcements

I have news to share with you!

Bet that got your attention. It’s also a great way to capture the attention of your target audience to update them on key changes to your business, products, or services.

Email marketing is the go-to strategy for such news, but what about the people who aren’t on your email list? Social media marketing is also great, but what if people want to know more?

Featuring an update or announcement on your blog invites your audience into the story behind your news, the process you went through to make it happen, and what’s in it for them.


#4 Industry insights

To all my service-based business comrades – this one is for you.

There’s nothing like demonstrating your expertise like a blog providing industry insights and news. It’s an opportunity to not only inform your clients on developments in your industry or niche, you also get to share your commentary and opinions on the topic.

For example, if you’re a lawyer and a new legislation passes in your specialist area, your phone is likely to ring off the hook as clients claw their way to grab your insight and advice. You can save yourself time by writing a single blog post summarising the new legislation, commenting on how this will affect your clients and stating how you can help.

Your post will also help build your credibility for client prospects to seek your services.

#5 Research-based articles

If you’re an academic or prefer a more journalistic approach, articles may be for you. Articles are more informative and research-based, great for informing your readers on technical subjects. To add another layer of credibility, interview experts in the field or related industries and include their comments and quotes in your article.

#6 Tips from your knowledge & experience

If educating your audience is your goal, a knowledge or experience based blog is a good way to go.

Maybe you have specialist knowledge in your niche, share it. For example, if you’re an educator with training in a specific teaching method, write a blog post on the foundations of the method with tips on how to put into practice.

Maybe you have life experience that you believe will benefit your readers, share that. You could be a coach with experience building a business; share tips you wish you had known when you started your business.

No matter your title/training/experience, blogs can be a powerful education tool!


#7 Solve their problem

Is there a problem you’ve heard repeatedly that your clients or customers are facing? Help them solve the problem by writing a blog post with the detailed solution.

If you’re selling a product, chances are, you introduced that product to market to solve an existing problem. Tell them how your product solves their problems in a way that your sales copy can’t due to word count. Answer all their ‘but whys’ and ‘but hows’ in the one place.

#8 Q&A series

What are the questions you hear from your clients or customers like a broken record? Use these common questions as content for a Q&A blog post. Answer their burning questions in relation to a particular topic and in the future, you can refer anyone who asks the same questions to your published blog post.

This means you get to answer their question and drive traffic to your website in one fell swoop!


#9 Expert round-up

You might not be an expert in any one area, but you’re a talented collaborator and connector of people. Play to your strengths and write an expert round-up post.

Ask a simple question and request a few experts in your niche or industry to each respond with an answer (give them a word limit to avoid waffle!). Then, choose the best answers to feature in a blog post. In exchange for their time and expertise, offer your experts exposure by including links to their websites or social media handles within your post.

#10 Getting to know you

My final useful blog topic is a personal one – getting to know you. Build a connection with your readers by revealing the person or people behind your brand.

What are your values? What is your mission? What causes do you support?

A few months ago, I got to ghost-write a blog post for a client sharing the social causes they support and why. It was an effective way to showcase their philanthropic work and tie it back to their underlying mission as a business. Writing these blog posts were a highlight for me as they covered topics I’m also passionate about!
