5 Powerful Yet Simple Steps To Master Your Message

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – I believe your message is precious cargo!

It needs to be cultivated, protected, and nurtured.

Your message requires the right environment to thrive, to successfully reach its intended destination – your desired audience.

To create the right environment, you need to know who you are, what you offer, why you do what you do, how you do it, and where you want to share that message.

Many business owners know their message better than anyone else does. They know their “why”, what they stand for and who they serve. But there’s a disconnect when they share that message with the world. They put the message out there and it falls flat or attracts the wrong audience.

Why? Because knowing your message isn’t enough.

It’s about how you share that message. The words you attach to that message. That’s what builds the bridge to connect you to the right audience.

So, give your message the attention it deserves and find the words that do it justice.

How do you do that? By taking intentional steps to master your message.

What happens when you master your message

A few months ago, I decided my messaging needed a refresh.

At the time, I was lacking passion for the work I was doing, not bringing in new clients and was unclear about who I wanted to serve. I was frustrated and knew something needed to change.

So, I went back to basics and worked on the foundations of my message. You’d think as a copywriter I would’ve already nailed my message!

I hadn’t.

Instead, when I first started, I just wrote words that sounded good, plastered them on my website and socials, and went with it. Over time, I’ve learned that to write the right words, you need to know your underlying message. You need to know who you’re speaking to. And when I received that revelation and ran with it, things changed.

I now get to work with more clients who have aligned values. I get excited to work on their content each day. I get a dopamine hit as soon as my fingers start tapping on my keyboard.

It’s reignited my passion to help my clients build a bridge between their message and their audience using the power of words! And I want that for you too.

Here are a few steps that will help you get there.

#1 Back to basics

Before you can share your message, you need to know your message.

To do that, let’s cover the basics and answer a few questions:

  • Who are you? (your identity)
  • How did you get here? (your business origin story)
  • Why do you do what you do? (your purpose)
  • What does success look like? (your objectives)
  • What do you sound like? (your brand voice – read more on that here)
  • Who are you speaking to? (your target audience)

That last question is a big one and one that we easily fail to spend enough time answering. There are some questions you should answer to help you define your audience (see a few in step #3). 

To create connection and build engagement, keep your audience in mind every time you share your message – speak directly to your audience!

Help your audience feel seen. Show them you understand.

Empathy is a powerful way to build connection with your audience.

 

#2 Nail your niche

The clearer you are about your niche and the more it comes through in your messaging, the more value you’re able to create for your business.

By communicating the area you specialise in and the specific group of people you serve, your relevance to that particular market increases significantly. You become the obvious answer to their needs. That means more sales!

Once you articulate your niche, your content will naturally flow from there – your marketing, website, social media, emails, etc will all link back to that specific thing you do for the target market you do it for.

#3 Attract your audience

The best way to attract and engage your audience is to know them.

To get to know your audience, ask:

  • What gets them up each morning?
  • What keeps them up at night?
  • What are their likes/dislikes?
  • What are their desires, needs and wants?
  • What are their goals in life?
  • What challenges are they currently facing?
  • What catches their attention?
  • What holds their attention?

If you’re unable to answer these questions based on what you’ve already seen or heard from your audience – ask them. Send a survey to your email list, share a poll on your Instagram stories or in a LinkedIn post, request feedback from existing clients or customers.

 

#4 Voice your value

To catch the attention of your ideal audience, you need to distinguish your voice.

And to sell what you have to offer and persuade your audience to take up that offer, you need to know your unique selling proposition (USP) – your value.

So, put it together and voice your value.

What makes you different? Why should they choose you? Communicate who you are, what you do and how you can help in one or two short sentences.

Keep it short yet specific.

As an example, below are two headlines I could feature on my website as a copy and content writer. Which one do you think is more effective?

Headline 1: I write copy and content to help your business.
Headline 2: I write thought-provoking copy and content to inspire and build positive change.

If you chose the second sentence, you’re on to it!

The first sentence is quite vague and isn’t clear on the types of businesses I work with. The second sentence indicates what I do (write copy and content), the type of copy I write (thought-provoking) and the desired outcome (to inspire and build positive change). This attracts businesses with similar goals.

#5 Tie it all together

So, when we bring the key steps together, we get your message tied up in a neat little bow. Now, if you’re someone who loves a good equation to process information, this is for you:

Your Voice + Your Niche + Target Audience + Value Offered = Message Mastered

As you work through each of the steps, you’ll see your message naturally take form. A message that’s unique to you, relevant to your audience and speaks volumes. Now, all you need if the punchy words to make it even more powerful.
